What Is the Difference Between Exclusive and Non-Exclusive Distribution?

Rights, Restrictions, Commission, and Distribution Strategy

When working with Sundesire Media Worx, you may choose between a non-exclusive and an exclusive distribution model. These formats differ significantly in terms of flexibility, obligations, financial terms, and how your catalog is distributed across digital platforms.

Non-Exclusive Distribution — Flexibility and Store-Level Control

  • you may work with multiple distributors at the same time;
  • you choose the specific stores where your releases will be distributed through Sundesire;
  • you may distribute the same content to other stores via other distributors;
  • the standard commission is 30%.

However, it is critical to understand:

  • all stores you assign to Sundesire become exclusive for those platforms;
  • you must not distribute the same content to those same stores through other distributors;
  • this rule protects your releases from duplicates, takedowns, and ISRC conflicts.

This format is ideal for:

  • testing the platform without terminating existing contracts;
  • partial catalog transfers;
  • flexible multi-distributor distribution strategies.

Exclusive Distribution — Single Channel and Reduced Commission

  • your selected catalog is distributed only through Sundesire Media Worx;
  • you do not distribute the same content through any other distributors in any store;
  • you receive a reduced commission of 25%;
  • priority moderation and extended support may apply;
  • terms are fixed for a defined contractual period.

The exclusive model is best suited for:

  • artists focused on long-term growth;
  • labels with a unified catalog strategy;
  • projects with an active release schedule.

Legal and Strategic Differences

  • in both models, full copyright ownership remains with you;
  • you grant only the right of digital distribution;
  • exclusive distribution limits only the distribution channels, not ownership;
  • in non-exclusive distribution, exclusivity operates at the individual store level;
  • all conditions are clearly fixed in the contract.

In summary: non-exclusive distribution provides maximum flexibility and allows you to split your catalog between multiple distributors — but each store you assign to Sundesire becomes exclusive for this platform. Exclusive distribution reduces your commission and creates a single unified distribution channel, but requires full trust and a centralized strategy.
